Help build a long-term biological monitoring programme for Guernsey

Guernsey has varied habitats supporting a rich mix of species, some of which are rare or endangered in the UK and Europe

About

The project is a partnership between the Guernsey Nature Commission and the States of Guernsey.

The Guernsey Nature Commission is developing a programme of robust, scientific, ecological data collection to inform various workstreams under the States of Guernsey 2020 Strategy for Nature. As identified in the State of Nature 2024 report for Guernsey and Herm, a lack of data is one of the key limitations to protecting and enhancing our natural environment through evidence-based decision making. This is also part of an approach to direct the effective use of resources. Once relevant data is available, it can be analysed, identifying priority areas for conservation and enabling evidence-based decision making regarding the natural environment.

This project will include the promotion of citizen science projects, to better engage the local community with nature and as a means of collecting a quantity of data with a low associated cost. However, there will be a need for more robust data collection methods to be employed in some areas.

Long-term biological programmes are important to help understand changes over time. They are a great way to engage with communities and to link with biological research.

Budget

The project is seeking funding with a maximum budget of £50,000 to develop this programme.

Contributions towards International Targets

Global Biodiversity Framework Targets

Sustainable Development Goals

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) sets global goals to protect biodiversity through its targets, most recently updated as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022. These targets aim to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and include goals such as protecting 30% of land and sea areas, restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems, reducing pollution, and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. They cover a wide range of issues, including health, education, gender equality, clean water, climate action, and biodiversity. Each goal has specific targets and indicators to measure progress, encouraging countries to work together toward a more sustainable and equitable future.

The Guernsey Nature Commission

The Guernsey Nature Commission recognises that the natural environment is declining in biodiversity and, hence, health. They are working hard to reverse this trend by protecting and enhancing Guernsey’s natural environment for the health of the economy and the wellbeing of the island community.

The Guernsey Nature Commission collaborates with the States of Guernsey, the third sector, business and the community, creating a nature network and facilitating a shared ‘voice for nature’. The GNC provides support in the delivery of the States’ Strategy for Nature, a multi-year plan with objectives that include connecting the community with nature, helping to ensure the diversity and resilience of natural capital and assets, and sharing knowledge about nature.
