Guernsey Biological Records Centre

Background

Funding the Guernsey Biological Records Centre (GBRC) is not just an investment in data. It is an investment in the very life that sustains us. Every carefully logged insect, plant, and bird is a piece of a vast, intricate puzzle that underpins our food, our water, and our environment. Pollinators that quietly work in our gardens and fields, rare plants clinging to fragile habitats, and species we have yet to fully understand. They all rely on vigilant record-keeping to survive. Without these records, we lose sight of the changes unfolding in our natural world, and with them, the ability to protect the most precious assets the planet has: its biodiversity.

Supporting the GBRC is supporting the guardianship of life itself, ensuring that the delicate threads of Guernsey’s ecosystems remain intact for generations to come.

About

The Guernsey Biological Records Centre (GBRC) is dedicated to gathering, managing, and sharing vital information about the rich wildlife, habitats, and natural environment of Guernsey and Herm.

By building and maintaining a trusted evidence base, the GBRC plays a key role in protecting and enhancing our islands’ biodiversity — helping local communities and decision-makers make informed choices that safeguard nature today and for generations to come. The mission is simple but powerful: to use knowledge to enrich our environment, strengthen our connection to nature, and ensure a thriving natural world for everyone, now and in the future.

Budget

The proposed budget of around £50,000, would directly strengthen the Guernsey Biological Records Centre’s ability to collect, collate, and manage biodiversity data with precision and efficiency. By investing now the Centre can ensure that every observation—from the tiniest pollinating insect to the rarest plant—is accurately documented, securely stored, and readily accessible to scientists, policymakers, and conservationists. In essence, the budget transforms raw sightings into actionable knowledge, empowering evidence-based decisions to safeguard Guernsey’s natural heritage.

Contributions towards International Targets

Global Biodiversity Framework Targets

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) sets global goals to protect biodiversity through its targets, most recently updated as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022. These targets aim to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and include goals such as protecting 30% of land and sea areas, restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems, reducing pollution, and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.

20: Strengthen Capacity-Building, Technology Transfer, and Scientific and Technical Cooperation for Biodiversity

Sustainable Development Goals

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. They cover a wide range of issues, including health, education, gender equality, clean water, climate action, and biodiversity. Each goal has specific targets and indicators to measure progress, encouraging countries to work together toward a more sustainable and equitable future. The following SDGs are addressed in the project:

Life below water
Life on Land

Partners

The GBRC is working closely with key partners, including the Guernsey Nature Commission and the States of Guernsey, to ensure that biodiversity data informs conservation policy, land management, and environmental decision-making.

These partnerships enable coordinated action, combining expertise, resources, and local knowledge to protect and monitor the island’s wildlife.
