Make Space for Nature,

Help Manx Wildlife Trust buy a new Nature Reserve!

EcoMatch: New Manx Nature Reserve

About

The Manx Wildlife Trust is the largest nature conservation body on the Isle of Man, the world’s only whole-nation UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. We proudly own a network of 32 nature reserves, comprising 2% of our small but highly populated nation. We are the largest non-government land manager, protecting land primarily for wildlife, but also with people and nature-based solutions in mind. The purchase and creation of a brand-new nature reserve will increase the area of land managed by Manx Wildlife Trust and help achieve our ambitious goals to bring about nature’s recovery and achieve our “30 by 30” international commitment.

Reaching 30 per cent means doubling the Island’s woodlands, restoring all drained peatlands, tripling wetlands, and creating more species-rich grasslands. MWT is planning to buy a plot of land to provide the opportunity to create new habitats and connect with other wildlife havens. Buying and restoring land that is nature-depleted will make a huge difference to local wildlife.

Contributions towards International Targets

Global Biodiversity Framework Targets

Sustainable Development Goals

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) sets global goals to protect biodiversity through its targets, most recently updated as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022. These targets aim to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and include goals such as protecting 30% of land and sea areas, restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems, reducing pollution, and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. They cover a wide range of issues, including health, education, gender equality, clean water, climate action, and biodiversity. Each goal has specific targets and indicators to measure progress, encouraging countries to work together toward a more sustainable and equitable future.

MWT Sustainable Development Goals

The Manx Wildlife Trust

The Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT), established in 1973, is the Isle of Man’s leading nature conservation charity. Based in Peel.

MWT’s mission is to protect and enhance the island’s natural environment, create more spaces for wildlife, and inspire people to act for nature . It engages the community through educational programs, outdoor learning initiatives, and volunteer opportunities, with over 500 volunteers contributing to its work.

In recognition of its significant contribution to conservation, MWT was honoured with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2024, the highest award given to volunteer groups in the British Isles.
