A Celebration of the Nature of...

About

This project will see a published book reviewing the importance, progress and challenges; and a complementary online conference, building on previous successful ones held every few years since 1999, most recently in 2021.

We are developing a landmark book that will bring to life the extraordinary natural heritage of the UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies, places that, though often overlooked, hold some of the most unique and threatened ecosystems under the UK’s stewardship. From remote volcanic landscapes and coral-ringed islands to rich woodlands and globally significant seabird colonies, these regions represent an astonishing concentration of global biodiversity.

The book will combine accessible science, compelling storytelling, and striking visuals to showcase their ecological importance, the challenges they face, and the inspiring conservation work underway. With support from funders, we aim to create an authoritative, beautifully crafted resource that raises awareness, fosters pride, and galvanises action to protect these remarkable but fragile environments.

We’d like to partner with organisations that share our commitment to celebrating, understanding, and safeguarding these remarkable environments.

Following nearly 40 years after the pioneering 1987 Fragments of Paradise, the new book is a hardback written by a range of specialists from the territories or elsewhere and lavishly illustrated by colour photos and other illustrations. It includes the results of studies and conservation efforts during this period

Budget

A budget of £10,000 is set for this project.

The book will be published in 2026. A large amount of materials has been collected and edited. The funds will support the design, publication and distribution of the book with an event held to highlight the publication and publicity to celebrate its release.

Contributions towards International Targets

Global Biodiversity Framework Targets

Sustainable Development Goals

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) sets global goals to protect biodiversity through its targets, most recently updated as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022. These targets aim to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and include goals such as protecting 30% of land and sea areas, restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems, reducing pollution, and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. They cover a wide range of issues, including health, education, gender equality, clean water, climate action, and biodiversity. Each goal has specific targets and indicators to measure progress, encouraging countries to work together toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
