Biodiversity & Well-being Toolkit

Management Options

The Biodiversity & Well-being Toolkit

As part of the Biodiversity and Well-being  toolkit project, the team undertook consultations with the community on Montserrat. Using the responses as a guide, a series of management options have been developed to support the community in developing the island’s sustainably while protecting unique wildlife and culture.

There are other things that you could also include, but most of these options have been considered as they cover a range of low-cost, easy to implement options with known benefits to people and the planet. The options are grouped into the following themes:

  • Caring for Wildlife: Supporting native plants, pollinators and other animals on Montserrat
  • Caring for Our Island: Supporting sustainable living on Montserrat
  • Caring for Our Community: Supporting well-being on Montserrat.

Some management options will have benefits across main overarching category types. All of the management options contribute towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The Biodiversity & Well-being toolkit document brings together the outcomes, resources, and lessons learned from the Biodiversity and Well-being Toolkit Project on Montserrat.

Developed through community engagement, partnerships, education activities, and biodiversity monitoring, the toolkit explores the connections between nature, culture, and well-being while providing practical guidance for supporting biodiversity across the island.

Alongside management options and monitoring tools, the document highlights traditional knowledge, youth engagement, botanical collections, and local case studies, creating a resource designed to support conservation, learning, and sustainable development in Montserrat and beyond.

The toolkit is being promoted on Montserrat as a first stop for those interested in developing in a sustainable way while ensuring their well-being and helping to monitor and protect the islands unique biodiversity.

The project team is pleased to present the toolkit and hope that it will be used for many years to come.
