Montserrat's National Herbarium

The Montserrat National Herbarium represents a landmark effort to document and preserve the island’s unique plant life for generations to come. Developed in close collaboration with two of the world’s leading botanical institutions, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the United Kingdom and Meise Botanic Garden in Belgium,  the project brings together Montserrat experts and specialists and world-class international expertise to build a comprehensive record of Montserrat’s flora.

The recent partnership with Meise Botanic Garden has been instrumental in digitising and curating botanical specimens, drawing on Meise’s extensive experience in managing large herbarium collections and making biodiversity data openly accessible. Their involvement has helped ensure that Montserrat’s plant records meet international standards and are integrated into global biodiversity databases.

Kew’s contribution has been equally vital, with the institution providing botanical expertise, taxonomic knowledge, and access to its vast network of plant scientists. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on plant diversity, Kew has supported the identification and verification of specimens, strengthening the scientific credibility of the herbarium and helping to place Montserrat’s flora in a broader regional and global context.

Together, these partnerships have transformed what might have been a modest local collection into a robust and internationally recognised resource. The Montserrat National Herbarium not only safeguards knowledge of the island’s plant diversity but also supports conservation planning, environmental research, and education — ensuring that Montserrat’s remarkable natural heritage is recorded, protected, and shared with the world.
